Here are the seven best pregnancy tests for every person.

We dove deep into leading pregnancy tests on the market and narrowed down which you could count on to deliver accurate, easy-to-read results before your expected period. An obstetrician/gynecologist on our Medical Expert Board also reviewed this article for medical and scientific accuracy surrounding what to look for in pregnancy tests, how accurate they are, and how soon you can take one.
For the most accurate results, the earliest you should take a pregnancy test is roughly 10 days after conceiving, or one to four days before your expected period , says Kecia Gaither, MD, MPH, a double board-certified OB/GYN and maternal-fetal medicine physician in New York. At this time, your levels of hCGthe pregnancy hormone in your urine that pregnancy tests measureare close to 25 mIU/ml, which is the threshold of most pregnancy tests. Its best to take the test first thing in the morning when hCG is most concentrated in your urine. You can get a false negative reading if youre early in your pregnancy and take the test in the evening.
We had five women spend over 60 hours testing 17 leading pregnancy tests to determine which ones deliver accurate, easy-to-read results before your expected period at an affordable price. An obstetrician/gynecologist on our Medical Expert Board also reviewed this article for medical and scientific accuracy.
When selecting a pregnancy test, its important to remember that different types of tests have different thresholds, so some will test positive sooner than others . Consider the cost and how easy the results are to interpret, especially if youre trying to conceive and may be using multiple tests per cycle.
Whether youre trying to conceive or avoiding pregnancy, we all want the same thing: an accurate pregnancy test that can detect a fertilized egg as early as possible. The good news: Nearly all pregnancy tests are 99% accurate at detecting hCG , the hormone that builds up in your urine when you become pregnant, says Eric Flisser, MD, a board-certified OB/GYN based in New York.

Clearblue Digital Pregnancy Test
$29 at Amazon
$13 at Target
$24 at Walgreens
Why We Like It
Dr. Flisser recommends the Clearblue Digital Pregnancy Test with Smart Countdown for anyone who finds color-change tests difficult to interpret and wants black-and-white answers. The test earned our top spot largely due to its clear communication: It clearly and simply displays the words pregnant or not pregnant to remove any doubt about the results. You can take this test up to four days before your expected period, and we especially liked the included chart that notes the test's accuracy percentage for every day of that countdown.
This pregnancy test is easy to use, as you can either immerse it in a cup of urine for 20 seconds or hold it midstream for five seconds. We loved how mess-free the experience was. The test has an extra wide tip to help catch more liquid midstream, as well as a heavy-duty cap to cover the soaked tip completely while you wait. The smart countdown clock tells you how long you have left to wait before displaying incredibly easy-to-read and clear results.
Its Worth Noting
We thought the test was so durable, easy to use, and crystal clear that wed willingly pay more for it. Its also worth noting the digital read of Not Pregnant can be triggering for some people who are having difficulty conceiving.

Clearblue Pregnancy Test Pack
$13 at Amazon
$11 at Target
$10 at Walmart
Why We Like It
If youre looking for absolute certainty, youll love the Clearblue Pregnancy Test Combo Pack, which comes with a pair of sticksone digital and one rapidto be used together. After immersing both tests tip down in a cup of urine, just wait 60 seconds and youll have both a color-changing line on display as well as a digital Pregnant or Not Pregnant. We loved that the double confirmation provided zero doubt as to the results.
Both tests have wide tips and secure caps for a mess-free test experience. The tip changes from white to pink when theyre sufficiently coated in urine, and the digital test has a countdown for ease of mind. The Clearblue Pregnancy Test Combo Pack is over 99% accurate from the day you expect your period, but both tests can confirm pregnancy five days before your missed period.
Its Worth Noting
The digital tests are a tad big and clunky, though this wasnt a deal breaker. Also, double testing may be overkill for some.

Best Strip Test
Pregmate Pregnancy Test Strips
$16 at Amazon
$16 at Target
$11 at Walmart
Why We Like It
Pregnancy strip tests are almost always cheaper than stick tests because they require a lot less packaging, but theyre just as reliable since they use the same technology, says Dr. Flisser. Pregmate Pregnancy Test Strips are the most affordable among all 17 tests we tried, which makes them ideal for anyone who takes tests frequently.
In addition to being budget-friendly, our testing proved this product easy to use: Each test strip must be dipped into a cup of urine for five seconds up to the line indicated on the strip itself. Moreover, we found the results clear and easy to interpret, with positive results showing up quickly (though the instructions say results could take up to 5 minutes to show). A result with one line indicates a negative pregnancy result, and two lines indicate a positive one. We also love that these test strips can show results as early as five days before a missed period.
Its Worth Noting
You do have to urinate in a cup to use these test strips, which may be inconvenient for some. Also, results can take up to five minutes to display, which is a long wait time.

Best Early Detection
Clearblue Early Detection Pregnancy Test
$19 at Amazon
$9 at Target
$9 at Walmart
Why We Like It
If you want to know if youre pregnant as early as possible, Clearblue Early Detection Pregnancy Test is able to detect pregnancy six days before a missed period (five days before expected period) 71% of the time, which is a full day earlier than most other tests. Overall, our testing found this test to be simple to use and interpret.
Additionally, we found it delivered results fastin less than one minute rather than the 35 minute wait-time outlined on the box. The color-changing results were easy to read, with an initially faint line that became bolder within 30 seconds.
Its Worth Noting
While this test can detect pregnancy earlier than others, its 71% detection rate could lead to a false negative, so youll want to re-test on the day of your expected period for 99% accuracy.

Natalist Early Pregnancy Test Strips
$15 at Amazon
View on Natalist.com
Why We Like It
Natalist Early Pregnancy Test Strips are FDA-cleared and over 99% accurate from two days before your expected period (though you can test as early as five days before). We found the strips intuitive to use, with a green handle to hold and a bold, black line indicating how deep to immerse it in a cup of urine. Even though the test didnt indicate when it had enough urine, we could visibly see the liquid start to move up the test trip. The test results are delivered quickly (much faster than the predicted five minutes) and are easy to understand with a well-defined and clear line.
In addition to their ease of use, Natalist test strips stand out for their minimal waste and packaging: These strip tests use 81% less plastic than stick tests, come in a recyclable box, and are 100% plastic neutral. For every pound of plastic Natalist sells, they remove a pound of plastic pollution. There are only a few competitors in the spacemost notably Hoopsy out of the UK (read: expensive shipping and not FDA approved) and Lia, a promising bio-degradable test thats struggling to meet demand. Compared to other products that are available in the U.S., Natalist is our top pick for best eco-friendly pregnancy test.
Its Worth Noting
Naturally, with its high cost, these tests arent ideal for someone looking to test once. Additionally, the instructions say to dip the test in a cup of urine, and it would be more convenient if a cup were included.

Best Digital
First Response Digital Pregnancy Test
$17 at Amazon
$26 at Walgreens
$29 at CVS
Why We Like It
The First Response Digital Pregnancy Test can tell you youre pregnant up to six days before your missed period, which is sooner than most other products we tried. One of our testers had actually used this test in the past to find out she was pregnant before her missed period. The test delivers clear results, with a digital display that says YES + or NO -".
With this test, you have the option to either pee directly on the stick or place it in a cup of urine, and both options take five seconds. Although it doesnt indicate that the urine has been absorbed, the digital display has a blinking clock to show that its working (though it didnt count down in any way).
Its Worth Noting
The cap doesnt feel as heavy duty as competitors. Also, the results took slightly longer than three minutes to show up (three minutes and 20 seconds, to be exact), even for one of our testers 30 weeks pregnant. Lastly, this test is one of the most expensive on our list, but due to its early-detection abilities and clear, digital display, we still feel its a great value.

First Response Triple Check Pregnancy Test
$14 at Amazon
$15 at Target
$24 at Walgreens
Why We Like It
After testing 17 different products, the First Response Triple Check Pregnancy Test Kit earned our top spot for fastest test. Youll have results in 60 seconds, max. During testing, it delivered a positive result in under 30 seconds.
Whats more, we love that this box actually comes with three tests: the Rapid Results test for quick answers, an Early Result test for 76% accuracy five days before your expected period; and a Digital Test (our top pick for Best Digital Pregnancy Test) for confirming your previous results with a clear YES + or NO -.
All three tests were easy to use, with liquid clearly moving up the strip into the testing area after 5 or 20 seconds of exposure to urine to indicate it was working. We love that one kit offers not only a way to triple-check results, but also a way to test at varying stages of early pregnancy.
Its Worth Noting
These arent the cheapest option. Also, three tests may be overkill for some.

Still, there are other things to consider when choosing one, like how long its been since you had sex, how sensitive the test is in detecting hCG (a hormone that rises soon after conception), and how easy it is to use without messing up. Our pregnant staffers assessed the tests accuracy, ease of use, and value at home for this list. We also asked obstetricians to share their tips for shopping for pregnancy tests.
According to OB-GYN Alyssa Dweck , M.D., a medical advisor for Intimina and member of the Parents expert review board, at-home pregnancy tests are highly accurate when used properly. It doesnt matter what method of urine collection the test utilizes, whether it displays your results with little lines or a digital reading, or whether it costs $5 or $25; if the test isnt expired and you follow the directions, youll more than likely get accurate results.
Pregnancy tests can be found pretty much everywhere, including pharmacies, supermarkets, grocery stores, and even online retailers. With so many choices, pregnancy tests are one of the most accessible health products around, but that also makes figuring out which one to pick pretty overwhelming. And when you need reliable test results , you dont want to be wandering up and down store aisles stressing over which one is the best. Thats why we had our pregnant staffers test 19 of the most commonly available pregnancy tests on the market.

Clearblue Digital Pregnancy Test
$29 at Amazon
$13 at Target
$24 at Walgreens
Why We Like It
The Clearblue Digital Pregnancy Test with Smart Countdown works quickly, is easy to use and interpret, and is pretty affordable. Plus, the smart countdown feature saves you a lot of stress.
One of the trickiest parts about taking an at-home pregnancy test is figuring out when to check your results: not waiting long enough and waiting too long can skew your reading, leaving you with an inaccurate result. The countdown timer tells you exactly when your results are ready, and then displays pregnant or not pregnant clearly on the screen.
In testing, we appreciated how easy it was to wait for and read our results (which, by the way, were ready in just 90 seconds!). The test was also durable, with a heavy-duty cap that prevented any mess, and allowed for multiple methods of urine collection. This test worked exactly the way it should have and gave clear, accurate resultsall for a reasonable costmaking it an easy pick for best test overall.
But Take Note
Our tester genuinely couldnt find any downsides to using this test, but if we could improve it at all, we would appreciate some indication that we had exposed the test to enough urine. (Thats a minor complaint, though!)

Clearblue Rapid Detection Pregnancy Test

Why We Like It
Even with rapid in the name of this test, we were still surprised by how quickly the Clearblue Rapid Detection Pregnancy Test confirmed pregnancy: In about 10 seconds, we had a plus sign in the results window. And speaking of plus signs, we appreciated that this test offered symbols for positive and negative results instead of making us interpret single or double lines. (There was a control line to reassure us the test was working correctly and giving accurate results.) We also loved that the test strip turned pink when enough urine had been absorbed, taking out the guesswork there, too.
We also tested the Clearblue Pregnancy Test Combo Pack, which includes both the digital and the analog tests in one package for Type As who want to double-check their results. As with the test of the individual versions, we found that each one of these tests turned out quick, accurate results. We particularly liked the wide tips of all the tests and how they turned from white to pink once they were sufficiently saturated with urine. The tests were easy to handle, simple to interpret, and good quality despite being sold in a cost-saving combination pack.
But Take Note
Though this didnt happen in our test, some complain that tests with blue dye can be harder to see or seem like false positives. In that case, a combination pack with the digital test might be more reassuring.

First Response Test And Confirm Pregnancy Test
$10 at Amazon
$10 at Target
$10 at Walmart
Why We Like It
Both the analog and digital tests in this kit were incredibly easy to interpret during testing. The test can work up to six days before your missed period (a day earlier than Clearblue). But since tests are always more accurate when you get closer to your missed period, you can use the second test to confirm it in a few days.
The process for testing is just about the same for bothyou can hold both in a stream of urine for five seconds, or dip it into a cup of urine for 20 seconds for the analog test and five seconds for the digital. Our pregnant tester was surprised by how little urine was needed for the tests to provide accurate results. While there is no countdown clock on the digital test, there is a clock that starts flashing once its been exposed to urine, indicating that youll get results within the next three minutes. The digital test displayed yes or no when it was ready, and the analog test gave us thick, bold double lines (no squinting required!).
But Take Note
If youve had a hard time trying to conceive, the solid, all caps NO- of the digital test may seem a little harsh.

First Response Triple Check Pregnancy Test
$14 at Amazon
$15 at Target
$16 at Walmart
Why We Like It
If youre trying to conceive and think this month might be the month, the First Response Triple Check Pregnancy Test Kit is a convenient way to confirm your suspicions three times over. Use the Early Result test up to six days before your period, follow it up with the digital test for a clear yes or no, then triple-check again right after you miss your period with the Rapid Result test. In our testing, we found that all three tests were easy to use. The early and digital tests delivered results before three minutes were up (for our tester who was months into her pregnancy). The Rapid Result showed up almost immediately. All three tests had clearly defined display screens and werent messy at all.
But Take Note
It can be a little tricky remembering which test to use when (or in which order to test) since all three are different. But we think you can handle it.

Frida Fertility Ovulation + Pregnancy Test

Why We Like It
If you need to track ovulation before trying to conceive and then ultimately testing for pregnancy, this kit is a cost-effective, nicely packaged way to meet all your conception needs. The Frida Fertility Ovulation + Pregnancy Test and Track Set pregnancy tests were straightforward and easy to use, plus we liked that the kit included a reusable cup and plastic bag for urine collection. The tests gave us clear, easy-to-read results in just a few minutes. And the user-friendly display was simple and intuitive. We didnt test out the ovulation strips (since our testers were already pregnant), but since you get 30 of them with this kit, its reasonably priced for someone going through this whole process.
But Take Note
If youre not planning to test for ovulation, this kit will include way more supplies than you need (though Frida does also sell a pregnancy test kit). Weve heard from other customers that the ovulation strips can sometimes be hard to read.

Pregmate Pregnancy Test Strips
$16 at Amazon
$16 at Target
$11 at Walmart
Why We Like It
If you dont care about having a plastic testing device or digital features like a smart countdown, the Pregmate Pregnancy Test Strips are a cost-effective way to test often and regularly. We found these tests to be a fast and accurate way to determine pregnancy, with clear testing and control lines. You can still test up to five days before your missed period. Depending on which pack youre buying, you can pay from $0.29 and $0.44 per strip, which is a pretty great deal for anyone wholl need to be testing regularly.
But Take Note
We didnt love that there was no option to insert the strip into a stream of pee, and you pretty much have to pee in a cup and dip these strips into it to collect a sample accurately. Also, according to instructions, the results have to be read right at five minutes and wont be accurate after that.

Best Value
up & up Early Result Pregnancy Test
$7 at Target
Why We Like It
Our experts all confirmed that analog tests are just as accurate as digital tests when used correctly, so if you can stockpile the Target Up & Up Advanced Early Result Pregnancy Test on the cheap and still rely on the results, why wouldnt you? In testing, we found these tests to work quickly and accurately.
We also liked the longer, wider design of these tests. If you prefer to literally pee on a stick rather than in a cup when taking a pregnancy test, the handle makes it much easier (and less messy).
But Take Note
This is a basic test that isnt available anywhere other than Target. Its also more expensive than strip options like Pregmate.

Clearblue Pregnancy Test
$8 at Walmart
View on Clearblue.com
$17 at Riteaid.com
Why We Like It
The Clearblue Flip & Click Pregnancy Test worked as quickly and accurately as all the other Clearblue tests we used, but we appreciated its foldable design, which allows for saving extra space, whether youre traveling or just want to stash this in your purse discreetly. Our results showed up within seconds, and it works whether you pee in a stream or a cup (our testers preference). Another favorite feature? When this test is positive, the test and control line form a plus sign, making it even easier to read your results.
But Take Note
Youll pay a bit more for the design here, so if you dont need an on-the-go pregnancy test, you may be better off spending your money on a different model (like the Clearblue test with a smart countdown, which is cheaper!).
