Chlamydia

Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacteria Chlamydia trachomatis. Chlamydia is the most commonly reported STD in the United States.1 However, some people with chlamydia may never have symptoms, which makes it very easy to spread from person to person. Chlamydia can be treated with antibiotics. If chlamydia is not treated, it usually does not go away on its own. It can stay within the body for years without symptoms and may flare up and cause serious complications. In people assigned male at birth, untreated chlamydia can spread to the testicles and the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles (epididymitis) and cause infertility. In people assigned female at birth, untreated chlamydia can spread to reproductive organs and can cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), ectopic pregnancy, and infertility.3- 5

Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Gonorrhea is the second most commonly reported STD in the United States.1 However, some people with gonorrhea may never have symptoms, which makes it very easy to spread from person to person. It can cause infection in the genitals, throat, and rectum. Gonorrhea is easily treatable, but usually will not go away on its own.2-5 If gonorrhea is treated early, it is unlikely to lead to complications. However, if it is not treated, it can spread and may cause serious complications. In people assigned male at birth, untreated gonorrhea can spread to the testicles and prostate gland and cause infertility. In people assigned female at birth, untreated gonorrhea can spread to reproductive organs and can cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID),ectopic pregnancy, and infertility.3-5
